Theo truyền thống, Switch là thiết bị chyển mạch hoạt động ở mức phần cứng (layer 2 - physical) dựa trên địa chỉ vật lý (Physical MAC address) của các thiết bị mạng. Switch có thể học, lọc và chuyển các luồng thông tin một cách nhanh chóng và hiệu quả giữa các cổng vật lý trên switch.

Switch layer 3 và 4 là thiết bị chuyển mạch phần cứng đa tầng được triển khai để cung cấp thêm một vài tính năng được định nghĩa tại tầng 3 (networking) và tầng 4 (Transport) giúp đáp ứng hiệu quả các yêu cầu như dẫn đường (routing), lọc (packet filtering), phân quyền ưu tiên (priorityzation), bảo mật (security), cân bằng tải (load balancing)... Tuy nhiên, không giống như các thiết bị được xây dựng ở tầng 3 và 4 thông thường, các tính năng cao cấp của switch layer 3 & 4 được tích hợp trong các chip phần cứng chuyên dụng nên có hiệu suất cao hơn hẳn.

HP V1410 Switch là loại switch layer 3 được thiết kế cho các mạng nội bộ gia đình, doanh nghiệp vừa & nhỏ, dạng để bàn hoặc rack, có cấu hình cố định (fixed configuration). HP V1410 Switch được bảo hành trọn đời nên đặc biệt thích hợp cho loại hình doanh nghiệp nhỏ cần các tính năng routing cao cấp nhưng dễ cấu hình và có mức chi phí đầu tư hợp lý.
